Niki resort was founded in 1986 at the middle of Nasu highland at Tochigi, where two mountain streams intersect. It started as a small hotel that had only 6 rooms. From the time when there was no such term as a “Small hotel”, they have been developing as a synthetic hotel that connects nature with humanity, using culture, art, food, and architecture. For the designer of ‘Auberge’, they used Takashi Sugimoto. For the eastern part of the compound a spa is located, designed by U.K.’s Terence Orby Conran. They are using designers who adopt styles based on Eastern philosophy incorporating Western design on top. The reason for their certification is, they are connecting Japanese and Eastern views on nature with modern expression as an art, promoting the human relation with seasonal changes. It is the method to open up the potential of location and using nature as a part of architecture. And they are using it for multiple cultural and educational uses as a cultural and administrative capital. Also, it is worth mentioning that they have the vision of Nasu being an educational center of Japan hospitality.
